It symbolizes movement, fluidity, vitality, just like a river that never stops flowing. Búatúnukā pays tribute to water, the vital element for all life. The Emberā-Chamí are a very spiritual people, they believe that everything and everyone has a soul, as a result their pieces are highly symbolical.
The patterns always carry a specific meaning, they are an open window into the Emberā-Chamí, history, culture and traditions. The top line represents Nepono, sacred plants and flowers used by the Shaman, Jaibanā, during spiritual ceremonies. The triangles represent the Andes, the tribe’s ancestral territory.
