TheEmberā-Chamí

The Emberā-Chamí belong to the Emberā or Eperā indigenous group. They inhabit the pacific and literal regions ranging from Panamá to Ecuador. They are estimated at 68 000 inhabitants.

Emberā-Chamí literally means the Emberá from the mountain. They have preserved their native language, which is closely related to the Arawak, Karib, Chibcha and Wounaan.

The Emberā consider the craft of weaving as in important way to keep connected to their culture and to preserve their ancestral practices. Their pieces represent the sound of the wind and are meant to highlight the beauty of the Emberā woman. Each piece has a deep rooted symbolism and a story to tell.
