Respect towards elders and spiritual leaders is still a cornerstone for the good functioning of contemporary indigenous peoples that inhabit modern day Colombia. Whether the communities have adopted more democratic aspects and have their leaders chosen through popular vote, or the spiritual leaders are still considered sacred and chosen through rituals; respect towards them and their teachings are crucial for cultural preservation and knowledge transmission, which are in turn the backbone of indigenous societies.
