Asociación Aretek

Asociación Aretek is a Wayúu association made of 27 women, who are all the main bread winners in their households. Lead by Lorena Pushaina,  Asociación Aretek was established 20 years. Through their work, some of the women have already been able to send their grown-up children to university. Legend has that the Wayúu women learned how to weave from the spider Walekerü. Aretek is the name of Walekerü’s daughter. By choosing Aretek as the name for their association, the women recognize themselves as Walekerü’s daughters too, the guardians and perpetuators of the Wayúu weaving tradition.
